Abstract:

This project continues the work of a previous successful project which enquired into the presence and origins of the idea of the landscape in Latin literature. The same research unit proposes in this project to proceed in two directions: on one hand enquiring into the chronological framework and work and authors who remained unstudied in earlier projects as a result of objective time and energy constraints; on the other launching cross-disciplinary research in relation to time frames and authors with the intention of identifying the profiles and functions of the natural elements (mountains, rivers, hills, plants and weather, human presence, etc.) which appear in real or literary landscape compositions. The semantic spectrum of the vocabulary used to denote the landscape and its components of both of these will be studied. The research work will involve professors, grant holders and scholars of Latin and other disciplines and will require multiple methodological approaches and specialist skills in diverse contexts from both the diachronic and discipline points of view.
