Apply with Us - How to participate in individual Calls for proposals

The Department of Historical and Geographic Sciences and the Ancient World promotes and supports the participation of researchers in individual calls for proposals. The Department does its utmost to achieve key goals such as obtaining international funds, fostering international research and attracting high-profile researchers. Since 2019, the Department has established a dedicated work group, the ERC@DiSSGeA team, to coordinate these efforts. The team is composed of teachers and technical and administrative staff, with the purpose of providing dedicated and targeted support to those who wish to participate in individual calls for proposals.

Participation procedures vary according to the type of funding. If you wish to participate in any competitive call indicating the Department as Host Institution, strictly adhere to the deadlines and procedures detailed below. We will not be supporting applications that do not meet the indicated deadlines.

Horizon 2020/Horizon Europe

Individual calls for proposals (particularly Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship and European Research Council Starting and Consolidator Grants)

To support participation in Horizon Europe individual calls for proposals, the Department has implemented two participation procedures

Participation in University calls that provide support to enter European individual calls

Periodically, the University of Padova implements support, preparation and training programmes for candidates who wish to participate in European calls for proposals choosing Padova as their Host Institution. The main programmes are the following:

  • MSCA MaRaThoN is a crash course for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships candidates who choose the University of Padovas as their Host Institution.
  • Talent@Unipd aims at selecting candidates with standards of excellence to participate in ERC-Starting Grant and ERC-Consolidator calls for proposals.

All candidates who intend to participate in these University calls choosing the Department of Historical and Geographic Sciences and the Ancient World as their Department of reference must follow the procedures established by the Marathon and Talent calls; furthermore, they must promptly notify the ERC@Dissgea team of their participation, by sending an email to research.dissgea@unipd.it.

This will allow technical and administrative staff and teachers of the Department to provide consistent and dedicated support to the candidates, assisting them while they work on their application.

  Researchers participating on their own

Candidates who have not participated in University calls can submit proposals for MSCA and ERC calls on their own choosing the Department as their host facility.

To do so, candidates are asked to notify their intention to participate in the relevant ERC or MSCA calls at least 4 months before the official call deadline, by sending an email to research.dissgea@unipd.
The email must include a preliminary expression of interest, consisting of an abstract (minimum 1000 words) and an academic and scientific CV. Candidates interested in the MSCA calls must also indicate the name of their chosen supervisor (or supervisors in the case of MSCA-Global).
Once the expression of interest has been submitted, the Department will promptly provide feedback to the candidate, after evaluating the logistical feasibility of hosting the application and its alignment with the Department’s research lines.

PLEASE NOTE. Acceptance of the expression of interest is in no way binding for the Department, which will provide full support for the application and, if required, the letter of commitment only after the submission (at least 15 days before the call deadline) of a complete application judged to be of at least sufficient overall quality.

Candidates who have submitted an expression of interest within the deadline, and whose proposal
has been accepted by the Department, will be offered the support of the ERC @DiSSGeA working
group under the following conditions:

  • for MSCA proposals: by July 10, at least a draft of the “Excellence” section must be submitted. Feedback will be provided in early August, focusing particularly on scientific content.
  • for ERC proposals: a complete draft of B1 and/or B2 must be submitted no later than 45 days before the call deadline.

Support from the ERC@DiSSGeA working group cannot be guaranteed beyond these deadlines.

PLEASE NOTE. Irrespective of the chosen procedure, we invite all candidates to add the email address research.dissgea@unipd to the list of addressees of notification in the Participant Portal. In doing so, the staff of the Department will be kept updated about the development of drafting and assessment processes and will be able to access the final proposal.

The participation procedures for other calls will be defined on a case-by-case basis.

Calls by foundations, research centers and funding programmes

Foundations, research centers and programmes supporting scientific research provide significant opportunities for the development of the scientific profile of young researchers. Some funding schemes for grants and research fellowships include: Gerda Henkel Foundation, Volkswagen Foundation, Branco Weiss Fellowship Society in Science, Irish Research Council postdoctoral programmes, Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, ecc.

The Department of Historical and Geographic Sciences and the Ancient World is available to support candidates who wish to participate in these funding schemes, both for those who choose (if required by the call) the Department as their Host Institution, and for Postdocs and PhD graduates who trained at the Department and intend to participate in this type of call.

To gain the support of the Department and, if necessary, the authorisation to choose the Department as HI, we invite candidates to inform the Research Staff by sending an email to research.dissgea@unipd.it, with an abstract of at least 1000 words on their research project and a copy of their CV, at least 1 month before the deadline of the call.
