Abstract:

This postdoctoral position will be carried out within the framework of the project “A fragile monopoly? Firearms, self-defence, gun licence and the state monopoly of legitimate violence in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom (1860-1960)” (FRAGMON). This project is a comparative historical study which examines how states devolve their power to punish and enforce law to private citizens and to what extent this contributed to consolidate or to challenge the legitimacy of the State in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom from 1860 to 1960. Therefore, the project examines gun licenses, commodification of weapons, self-defense, private police and vigilante groups from the points of view of: A) legal, political and cultural debates B) concrete practices C) social impact (e.g. legitimization/trivialization of violence, social distinction, gender identities, sports).

The FRAGMON project will cooperate in a synergic and complementary way with the ERC-fuded project PREWArAs.
