International conference | Constructions of knowledge, practices, and representations of vegetal life in Christian space from late antiquity to the early modern age
Sala Bortolami, Palazzo Jonoch Gulinelli. Via del Vescovado, 30 Padova
Dal 30.10.2024 al 31.10.2024
The international conference "Constructions of knowledge, practices, and representations of vegetal life in Christian space from late antiquity to the early modern age" aims to offer an interdisciplinary and "longue durée" perspective on the construction of knowledge, practices, and representations of vegetal life within the Christian world, from the end of antiquity to the early modern period. Special attention will be given to the interaction between secular knowledge and exegetical-theological traditions, as well as to how these forms of knowledge were communicated and transmitted over time.
The conference will bring together junior and senior scholars, whose research spans a wide range of historical periods and disciplinary approaches, to explore whether, and to what extent, late antique and medieval Christian perceptions of vegetal life continued to influence early modern studies of the plant world in both Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant-Reformed contexts.
The event is organised within the framework of the project Privileged partnership between the University of Padua and the University of Lausanne (2023 Call) under the scientific supervision and coordination of Vittorio Berti, Simona Boscani Leoni, Maria Teresa Dolso, Guillaume Favrod, Emanuele Fontana.
