International workshop | Complex objects, different perspectives: studying and digitising cecidological collections

All'inizio del secolo scorso, una fitta rete di naturalisti e appassionati si dedicava alla raccolta e allo studio delle galle, o cecidi, ovvero escrescenze vegetali indotte da insetti, funghi, acari e altri organismi che, ancora oggi, sono al centro di dibattiti. Lo studio di questi "oggetti", per loro natura interdisciplinari, ha portato alla formazione di collezioni conservate nei musei di storia naturale, nelle sezioni di botanica o di entomologia e negli istituti agrari. Il workshop metterà in relazione gli approcci di diversi studiosi e studiose europei riguardo alla formazione delle galle e alla conservazione delle collezioni cecidologiche, concepite come archivi del vivente. Lo studio scientifico verrà ampliato alle discipline umanistiche per esaminare la biodiversità alla luce delle trasformazioni della natura e della società, in particolare nell'era dei progetti europei di digitalizzazione delle collezioni dei musei di storia naturale.

At the beginning of the last century, a dense network of naturalists and amateurs was devoted to collecting and studying galls, also known as cecidia. These plant growths, which are induced by insects, fungi, mites and other organisms, are still the subject of debate today.The study of these inherently interdisciplinary ‘objects’ has led to the creation of collections preserved in natural history museums, in botany or entomology departments, and in agricultural institutes. This workshop will bring together the approaches of various European specialists and scholars to discuss the formation of galls and the conservation of cecidological collections, conceived as archives of living organisms. The scientific study will extend into the humanities by examining biodiversity in the light of changes to nature and society, with a particular focus on European projects involving the digitisation of natural history museum collections.
